The program provides long-term, low-interest rate loans to
full-time and half-time financially needy students. You must
repay this loan to your school. The Nursing
Student Loan does not require an application, a promissory
note will be provided to students during orientation. Students
are not limited to the recommended programs described in this
section. The School of Nursing will certify any loan requested
for eligible borrowers. The private loan programs outlined
are those we are confident will serve our students well. Students
are encouraged to visit our website often for the latest information
about borrowing to meet educational costs.
The Plan is a combination of federal, institutional, and private
sources of funds the we hope will meet the diverse needs of
our students, providing options for part-time, full-time,
undergraduate, graduate, professional, and international students
and families. We have carefully selected the providers for
the Columbia-branded payment plan, loans, and tuition insurance
plan.

The UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing participates in grant
and loan programs in accordance with rules, regulations, and
financial aid policies as set forth the U.S. Department of
Education (Federal) and the Pennsylvania Higher Education
Assistance Agency (State). All grants and loans, as a result,
are based primarily on financial need. The Full-Tuition Loan
Program is designed to support a student throughout the entire
progrm pending successful academic performance. Students are
required to pass each course in the program with a minimum
grade of 80%. Students who pass a course but attain a grade
of less than 80% may continue in the program, but they forfeit
their Full-Tuition Loan support.

The Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELRP) offers
registered nurses substantial assistance
to repay educational loans in exchange for service in
critical shortage facilities. Authorized by Section
846 of the Public Health Service Act, as amended, the purpose
of the NELRP is to assist in the recruitment and retention
of professional nurses dedicated to providing health care
to underserved populations.
During the past three funding cycles, all funded applicants
were employed under First Funding Preference, which is awarded
to applicants with greatest financial need who work in:
Disproportionate Share Hospitals
Nursing Homes
Federally Designated Health Centers
Federally Designated Migrant Health Centers
Public Health Departments
Rural Health Clinics
